Spring 2012

We will soon start seeing tree pollen in Colorado Springs and surrouning areas. To our patients with nasal congestion during the spring, start using your prescription nasal sprays before your symptoms start. This gives you a better chance to minimize the stuffy nose that can go along with springtime allergy. For those patients on allergy shots, hopefully this spring will be better than the last spring and you will only require allergy medications as needed. Call us today at 719-592-1365 if you suffer from allergy or asthma problems this time of year.

Enjoy Colorado!

Asthma in Colorado Springs: Update

Eric8_08_compAsthma in Colorado Springs: Update

The Centers for Disease Control have announced that asthma rates are on the rise. The number of people with asthma has increased by 4.3 million in the last decade. About 1 in 12 Americans have asthma with a higher percentage of children with the disease. So if you are concerned that you or a family member might have asthma, what signs/symptoms should you look for? Chronic cough is the most common sign of asthma especially in children. Cough that wakes you up from sleep, cough with activity, or excessive cough with viral illness or allergy exposure should be evaluated for possible asthma. Patients also complain of wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness, and frequent “bronchitis” episodes.

Allergists specialize in diagnosing and treating asthma as well as allergic diseases. If you have a chronic cough or wheeze, please consider discussing this with your physician and ask if an Allergist referral may be indicated.

Spring into Allergy Season

Eric8_08_compSpring into Allergy Season

Spring is here and with it comes warmer weather, outdoor activities, and allergies. Everyone is anxious to get outside, especially in Colorado. Unfortunately, for people with allergies, this can be a difficult time of year. Tree pollen predominates in the spring with poplar and juniper trees being especially problematic. This pollen can cause sneezing, itchy eyes, congestion, runny nose, and swelling. I remember my own son’s eyes being so swollen and itchy in the spring when he was younger that he was sent home from school. However, with proper identification of his allergy triggers, environmental control techniques, medications, and eventually desensitization therapy, I am proud to say he hasn’t missed a day of school due to allergies for many years. At Colorado Springs Allergy and Asthma Clinic, we work hard for all of our patients, from a few months of age to patients in their 90’s, to enjoy Colorado without allergy symptoms getting in the way.

If you are having problems this time of year, please come see us. Allergies don’t have to be something “I just live with”…help is a phone call away.

Spring is almost here!

marianneleahy2March 1, 2011

Did you know that trees start pollinating in Colorado in February?  Pollen counts for trees over the past 2 weeks have shown mild to moderate counts, but soon, they will be at high levels.  To prevent allergy symptoms, now is the time to start allergy medications for the coming allergy season.  Intranasal steroids (nose sprays) all take approximately one week to begin working to decrease allergy symptoms, so now is the time to start those nose sprays!  Steroid nose sprays can relieve eye allergy symptoms too.   Many patients are able to take a break from their oral antihistamines during the winter months, so now is a good time to start taking those also.  Another highly effective therapy for nasal allergy symptoms is nasal irrigations.  If you’ve never tried doing nasal irrigations, let us show you how!

Inhalers for Asthma Use

February 2011

The staff at Colorado Springs Allergy and Asthma clinic would like to wish all of our patients well, and hope for continued health during this winter season. With that said, there has been new research published in the Journal of General Internal Medicine, which indicated that some asthmatics may be taking their inhaled medications incorrectly. According to the researchers, respiratory inhalers require multiple coordinated steps. One of the biggest problems the researchers noted was that the patients failed to breathe out fully before placing the inhaler in their mouth. The key is, don’t be afraid to ask questions from your provider. So at your next asthma check up, be sure to review your technique with our staff. We are more than happy to help you breathe easier!

Good morning to all of our patients at Colorado Springs Asthma & Allergy Clinic. We wanted to let you know that spring time is not the only thing lurking around the corner. Allegra and Allegra-D will be sold over-the-counter as of March of 2011. This will be a non-sedating option similar to Claritin and Claritin-D. Now you can have the convenience of getting this antihistamine at your local pharmacy without a prescription

Until next time, stay warm, stay safe, but most importantly stay healthy.

Yours truly,

Cold Weather - Asthma

January 2011

Happy New Year from the staff at Colorado Springs Allergy and Asthma Clinic! We hope that the year is off to a great start for all of our patients and friends in the community. With the cold weather here in Colorado Springs in full swing, it is very important for those patients with asthma to be especially cautious. Simply put, asthma may get triggered in the winter weather!  Just a few reminders for you:

Try to limit your exposure to the cold air, and if you must go out, make sure to dress warmly. The cold air and the dryness may make asthma worse. Stay away from people with colds or flu like symptoms-remember to wash your hands often!  And lastly, always take your asthma medications as directed.  Stay healthy everyone.

Lisa Brownworth - Nurse Practitioner
